What you are looking at
KWcam is the classic panorama of Kīlauea's summit, taken from the west rim of Kaluapele, the summit caldera, looking southeast across Halemaʻumaʻu crater. The wide lens takes in the near crater walls and rubble slopes at the bottom of the frame, the broad lava lake surfaces of recent eruptions across the middle, and the far caldera rim and ocean horizon on top. The vent's steam plume often appears toward the right side.
Kīlauea's summit has erupted repeatedly since 2020, and since late 2024 it has produced episodes of lava fountaining separated by pauses. A single still image cannot tell you whether an episode is underway, so treat the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory daily update and alert level as the place to check the current status.
A fresh frame appears here about every five minutes. Sunrise sits roughly in front of the camera, so early frames can be washed out by glare; late afternoon gives softer, even light. At night, glowing lava shows clearly against the dark floor. Tip: HVO pairs this view with a thermal camera from the same spot (F1cam), which sees heat through fumes when this one is hazy.
This view is worth a look at night too.

Kilauea is the youngest and most active volcano on Hawaii Island, a broad shield on the southeastern slope of Mauna Loa inside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
