What you are looking at
This is V1cam, one of the U.S. Geological Survey's livestream cameras watching Kīlauea volcano in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. Run by the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, it sits on the northwest rim of the summit caldera and looks into Halemaʻumaʻu crater from the west. It is a pan-tilt-zoom camera, so observatory staff may change the angle or zoom depending on what the volcano is doing.
Kīlauea's summit eruption that began in December 2024 has come in episodes: lava fountains that can last hours, separated by pauses of days when the crater floor cools and darkens. During an episode you may see fountains, lava flows spreading across the crater floor and a bright orange glow at night. Between episodes you may see steam, gas, a crusted lava lake surface or simply cloud and rain sweeping across the rim.
The feed plays as live video on YouTube. If the picture looks blurry, USGS suggests refreshing your browser. A practical tip: the observatory posts updates on the current activity and the expected timing of the next episode, so check the USGS Kīlauea page before settling in, and remember Hawaiʻi time is several hours behind the US mainland.
