What you are looking at
Known as V3cam, this camera stands on the south rim of Kīlauea's summit caldera and looks north into Halemaʻumaʻu crater from much closer than most public viewpoints. The frame is dominated by the lava-covered crater floor, with the active vent area, its spatter cone and the layered lava surfaces around it in the center, and the far crater walls and caldera rim along the top. The south rim is closed to the public, so this camera shows a view few people ever see in person.
Halemaʻumaʻu has been the focus of Kīlauea's summit eruptions in recent years, including the episodic lava fountaining that began in December 2024. Activity can switch on and off within hours, so check the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory update before assuming anything from a single picture.
The picture on this page is a still frame, renewed about every five minutes. Expect thick steam on cool, humid mornings, a strong red-orange glow at night whenever lava is exposed, and a pale volcanic haze, or vog, on calm days. This is a pan-tilt-zoom camera, so HVO may reframe it. Tip: compare it with the east-rim and west-rim cameras to see the same vent from three sides.
This view is worth a look at night too.
