What you are looking at

V3cam is a U.S. Geological Survey livestream from the southern rim of Kīlauea's summit caldera, run by the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory. The original V3 camera was destroyed by lava fountaining during episode 38 of the eruption on December 6, 2025. This replacement camera continues the south view, though USGS notes it is permanently offset to the east of the old one. It is a pan-tilt-zoom camera, so the angle and zoom can change.

The summit eruption that began in December 2024 has played out in episodes, with lava fountains, sometimes very tall, followed by pauses when the crater goes quiet. From the south you may watch fountains and flows across Halemaʻumaʻu, red glow and incandescent spatter after dark, and thick plumes of gas. Between episodes there may be little more than steam and the dark crater floor.

The feed plays as live video on YouTube. If it looks blurry, refresh your browser, as USGS advises. A practical tip: the observatory publishes regular updates with the latest activity and any forecast for the next fountaining episode, so check the USGS Kīlauea pages before you watch, and keep in mind that Hawaiʻi does not use daylight saving time.
