What you are looking at
KOcam watches the upper East Rift Zone of Kīlauea from Mauna Ulu, the lava shield built by a long eruption from 1969 to 1974, about 9 km (6 miles) southeast of the summit caldera in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. The rift zone is the line of cracks, pit craters and cones along which magma moves away from the summit, and this camera keeps an eye on that stretch of ground.
Eruptions and intrusions along the upper and middle East Rift Zone have happened several times in recent years, including a short eruption near Nāpau Crater in 2024. Because the rift can stay quiet for long stretches, many frames show only lava fields, vegetation, fog or rain. For current conditions, check the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory update and alert level.
The image here refreshes about every five minutes. This part of the park sits in the cloud belt, so mist and drizzle are common, especially in the afternoon; early mornings tend to be clearer. Night frames are dark unless there is new activity. Tip: Chain of Craters Road passes close to Mauna Ulu, and a short hike from there leads up nearby Puʻuhuluhulu for a similar view in person.

Kilauea is the youngest and most active volcano on Hawaii Island, a broad shield on the southeastern slope of Mauna Loa inside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Its summit caldera holds Halemaumau crater, home of the fire goddess Pele in Hawaiian tradition, and two rift zones run east and southwest from it. The 35-year Puu Oo eruption on the East Rift Zone ended in 2018, when lava poured into lower Puna…
