What you are looking at

HPcam looks at Hōlei Pali, the tall fault scarp on Kīlauea's south flank in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, about 18 km (11 miles) southeast of the summit. The camera faces up the long, dark slope of the pali, with grasses in the foreground and lava flows, both old and from recent decades, stacked across the cliff above. Chain of Craters Road switchbacks down this escarpment on its way to the coast.

The pali is one of a series of cliffs formed as Kīlauea's south flank slowly slides toward the ocean. During the long Puʻuʻōʻō eruption from 1983 to 2018, many lava flows poured over Hōlei Pali on their way to the sea, and the road was buried more than once. A camera here watches for any new flow coming down from the East Rift Zone; the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory posts current activity.

A fresh frame appears here about every five minutes. Mornings bring strong sun from the east and some glare; afternoons on this dry, windy coast are often hazy with vog or sea spray. Night frames are dark unless lava is present. Tip: bring water and sun protection if you drive down Chain of Craters Road, since there is no shade along the pali.
