What you are looking at
This camera at the GUAC site, about 3 km (2 miles) north of the summit near the mouth of the Mount St. Helens crater, looks south into the crater itself. The frame shows the rugged crater floor and debris in the foreground, the lava domes in the middle, and the crater rim beyond, with the east wall's rocky cliffs on the right. In the morning, the sun can rise over the rim and wash out the image.
The crater opened during the May 18, 1980 eruption, when the north flank collapsed in a giant landslide. Lava domes grew on the crater floor from 1980 to 1986 and again from 2004 to 2008, and Crater Glacier has since wrapped around them. This view is the closest public look at those domes. The CVO Mount St. Helens page lists the current alert level.
Expect a new still roughly every ten minutes. Clear afternoons, with the sun to the west, usually give the best light on the domes; mornings are often backlit. Steam may drift from warm spots on the domes on cold days, and winter snow can bury the camera's foreground. Tip: compare it with the Johnston Ridge dome camera to see the same domes from farther away.
