What you are looking at

One of several zoomed views from Johnston Ridge Observatory, this camera looks south-southeast at the east wall of the Mount St. Helens crater, about 9 km (6 miles) away. The frame follows the jagged crest of the wall against the sky, with the steep rock face and talus slopes below. Its purpose is to track rockfalls and changes on this side of the crater, where loose rock is constantly breaking away.

The crater walls were left standing after the 1980 lateral blast, and they are made of weak, fractured rock that sheds debris every day. Large rockfalls send dust plumes that can look like ash from a distance, so cameras like this help the Cascades Volcano Observatory explain what people may see. The CVO Mount St. Helens page posts the current alert level and updates.

The snapshot updates about every ten minutes. On bright days with high haze the view can turn pale, showing only the silhouette of the rim; clear mornings or late afternoons give more detail. Winter snow highlights ledges and gullies. Tip: if you spot a dust cloud here, compare it with the crater-floor cameras to see where it came from.
