What you are looking at
Zoomed in from Johnston Ridge Observatory, this camera looks south-southeast some 9 km (6 miles) toward the Loowit area, where the Mount St. Helens crater opens to the north. The frame shows the long, smooth slope of the volcano's flank rising toward the crater rim, and the fan of sediment where Loowit Creek spills out of the crater onto the Pumice Plain below.
Loowit Creek carries meltwater from Crater Glacier and snowfields out of the crater, dropping over Loowit Falls and spreading sand and gravel in a growing fan. Floods and small debris flows here, often after heavy rain or rapid snowmelt, reshape the fan from year to year. The Cascades Volcano Observatory watches it as part of tracking how the 1980 landscape keeps changing. See the CVO Mount St. Helens page for the current alert level.
The picture on this page is a still frame, renewed about every ten minutes. Late-summer afternoons show the fan's sediments and channels best; morning haze and backlight can flatten the view. Winter snow covers the flank down to the plain. Tip: pair it with the Glacier camera, which shows the ice where much of this water comes from.
