What you are looking at
This Johnston Ridge Observatory camera zooms south across 9 km (6 miles) of blast zone into the crater of Mount St. Helens, aiming at Crater Glacier and the front of its ice where it spills toward the crater mouth. The frame is dominated by the crater's dark, steep walls with a notch in the skyline, and the glacier's debris-covered ice below; in strong backlight it can look like a simple dark silhouette.
Crater Glacier began forming in the shaded crater after the 1980 eruption, fed by snow and avalanches from the walls. It is one of the youngest glaciers in the world and has advanced around both sides of the lava domes. Its ice front is watched for changes and for meltwater and debris that flow onto the Pumice Plain. The CVO Mount St. Helens page carries the latest status.
New images arrive about every ten minutes. Midday sun in summer shows the dirty ice and crevasses best; in winter, snow blankets everything. Morning light often backlights the crater walls. Tip: compare it with the Loowit Fan camera to see where water from the glacier leaves the crater.
