What you are looking at
This Johnston Ridge Observatory camera looks down into the upper North Fork Toutle River valley below the ridge, rather than at the volcano itself. The frame shows a braided stream winding through gray, deeply gullied deposits from the 1980 debris avalanche, with steep eroding banks, terraces and scattered young conifers and shrubs taking hold on the hummocky ground.
On May 18, 1980, the largest landslide in recorded history swept down the north flank of Mount St. Helens and buried this valley under deep debris. Since then, rivers have cut new channels and carried huge amounts of sediment downstream, which is why agencies built a sediment-retention structure on the North Fork Toutle. This camera shows that erosion in action. Volcano updates are on the CVO Mount St. Helens page.
Expect a new still roughly every ten minutes. Spring snowmelt and fall rains bring higher, muddier flows; summer reveals the channel patterns most clearly; winter can coat the valley in snow. Tip: compare clear images from different seasons to see how quickly the channel shifts across the valley floor.
