What you are looking at
The OKCF camera sits at about 685 m (2,250 feet) on the south side of Okmok's caldera on Umnak Island, roughly 4 km (2.5 miles) from its center, and looks north-northeast into the caldera. The frame shows the dark, rugged caldera floor with its cinder cones and young volcanic deposits, the caldera walls in the background, and a dark slope close to the lens on the right.
Okmok is a broad shield volcano with a caldera about 10 km (6 miles) across. It erupted lava in 1997, and in 2008 it produced a sudden explosive eruption that built a new cone, now named Ahmanilix, and sent ash over the Aleutians. Okmok is one of the most active volcanoes in the central Aleutians. Check the Alaska Volcano Observatory Okmok page for the current alert level.
The snapshot updates about every ten minutes. Summer brings green tundra on the outer slopes and long days; fall and winter bring snow and storms. Low cloud often fills the caldera. Tip: compare it with the OKIF camera, which sees the whole volcano from the east.
