What you are looking at
The OKIF camera sits at about 220 m (720 feet) on the east side of Okmok Volcano on Umnak Island, about 15 km (9 miles) from the caldera's center. It looks west across wide, green tundra to the volcano's low, flat skyline, which is the rim of its large caldera. Unlike pointed cones, Okmok looks like a long, gently rising ridge from here.
Okmok's caldera formed in huge eruptions thousands of years ago. Inside it, cones have erupted many times, including in 1997 and in 2008, when a powerful explosive eruption created a new cone and spread ash across the region. Because Okmok is broad and low, ash clouds rising above the rim are the main thing to watch for here. The Alaska Volcano Observatory Okmok page lists the current alert level.
New images arrive about every ten minutes. Summer turns the tundra a vivid green; in winter, the whole scene is white. Low clouds frequently hide the caldera rim. Tip: for a view inside the caldera, switch to the OKCF camera on its south rim.
