What you are looking at

This USGS Yellowstone Volcano Observatory camera looks across Biscuit Basin, a thermal area along the Firehole River near Old Faithful in Yellowstone National Park. The frame shows pale, mineral-crusted ground with patches of grass, steaming vents and hot pools, and a dark band of lodgepole pine forest along the horizon.

On July 23, 2024, a hydrothermal explosion at Black Diamond Pool in Biscuit Basin threw rocks and mud into the air and damaged the boardwalk. Hydrothermal explosions happen when hot water suddenly flashes to steam underground; they are not volcanic eruptions, but they can be dangerous. Cameras like this one help the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory watch the area. Check the YVO and National Park Service pages for current conditions and closures.

The picture on this page is a still frame, renewed about every ten minutes. Cold mornings, especially in fall and winter, create billowing steam clouds over the basin; summer midday images show the colors of the ground best. Snow covers everything in winter except the hot ground. Tip: steam is much more visible in cold, humid air, so morning images often look more dramatic than afternoon ones.
