What you are looking at
This Yellowstone Volcano Observatory camera looks out over Yellowstone Lake from a high point near Lake Village on the lake's northwest shore. The frame shows a dense lodgepole pine forest in the foreground with a few rooftops, the wide blue surface of the lake beyond, and the Absaroka Range along the far shore on the horizon.
Yellowstone Lake is the largest high-elevation lake in North America and lies partly within the Yellowstone caldera. Its floor holds hot springs, vents and craters formed by hydrothermal explosions, including Mary Bay on the north shore, one of the largest such craters known. Scientists study the lake to understand the hydrothermal system beneath it. The YVO website posts current updates on the Yellowstone volcano.
The picture on this page is a still frame, renewed about every ten minutes. The lake usually freezes in winter and thaws in late spring, and the camera shows ice, snow, open water and changing colors through the year. Calm mornings bring reflections, while afternoon winds raise whitecaps. Tip: check this camera in late spring to watch the ice break up on the lake.
