What you are looking at
This camera in Biscuit Basin, Yellowstone National Park, looks at Black Diamond Pool, the hot spring where a hydrothermal explosion occurred on July 23, 2024. The frame shows the pool's steaming water and the crater around it, with snowy, forested hills in the background in winter and mineral-crusted ground around its edges.
The 2024 explosion sent rocks, mud and steam high into the air and damaged the nearby boardwalk. Such explosions are caused by water flashing to steam underground and are among the most common hazards in Yellowstone's thermal areas. Since then, the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory has watched the pool with cameras and other instruments. For current information, check the YVO and National Park Service websites.
Expect a new still roughly every ten minutes. In winter, steam can fill the frame almost completely, while summer days show the water and surrounding ground more clearly. Snow piles up at the edges of the pool. Tip: a sudden change in steam or water level is worth comparing with YVO updates, as smaller explosions have been reported here since 2024.

Yellowstone National Park, set up in 1872 as the first national park in the world, covers a high plateau mostly in northwest Wyoming, reaching into Montana and Idaho. Beneath it lies one of the largest volcanic systems on Earth. The last lava flows came about 70,000 years ago, but heat from below still drives the park's geysers, hot springs, mud pots and steam vents, the largest collection of hydrothermal features…
