Live cameras in Joensuu, Finland

Joensuu is the capital of North Karelia, in the far east of Finland, and has about 79,000 residents, making it the eleventh largest municipality in the country. Its name means "river mouth," and the city indeed grew where the Pielisjoki River flows into Lake Pyhäselkä, part of the greater Saimaa system. Founded in 1848, Joensuu became a timber and trading town and is now a university city, home to one of the two main campuses of the University of Eastern Finland. The market square, the Art Nouveau city hall and the riverside parks give the compact center a relaxed feel.

The city's biggest summer event is Ilosaarirock, one of Finland's oldest rock festivals, held each July on the island park of Laulurinne beside the river. In late winter the Joensuu City Orchestra hosts Joensuu Music Winter, a classical festival that has run for more than forty years.

Joensuu runs on Finnish time like the rest of the country, UTC+2 in standard time and UTC+3 from late March to late October. Being far east, it sees the sun earlier on the clock than western Finland: around midsummer sunrise comes at about three in the morning and sunset after eleven, while in late December the sun is up only from about half past nine to half past two. Winters here are colder and snowier than on the coast, and frost on the pavement can appear from October onward.

About an hour's drive north is Koli National Park, whose hilltops above Lake Pielinen are one of Finland's national landscapes. The Orthodox monastery of Valamo at Heinävesi lies to the southwest.
