Savonlinna is a lake town in South Savo, in eastern Finland, built across a string of islands and straits in the Saimaa lake system. It grew up around Olavinlinna, the stone castle that Erik Axelsson Tott began in 1475 on a rocky islet in the channel, and the town itself was founded in 1639. Today about 31,000 people live in the municipality, which also takes in Kerimäki, home of what is called the largest wooden church in the world, and the pine-covered Punkaharju ridge with the Lusto forest museum. Many Finns simply call Savonlinna the capital of Saimaa.
The town is best known for the Savonlinna Opera Festival, first held in 1912, which stages full productions inside the castle courtyard every July. Lake steamers, a waterfront market and the summer crowds make July the busiest month by far.
What the cameras show
The views gathered here are road-weather cameras run by Fintraffic and published through its open Digitraffic service. They sit at weather stations beside main roads around Savonlinna and its lake country, pointing along the carriageway so road crews and drivers can judge snow, slush, fog or glare. Each camera sends a fresh still picture every few minutes rather than video, and many stations have more than one direction to choose from. Expect asphalt, forest edges and the occasional glimpse of water between the pines.
Savonlinna keeps Eastern European Time, two hours ahead of UTC in winter and three ahead from late March to late October. Light changes enormously over the year. Around the June solstice the sun rises shortly after three in the morning and sets close to eleven at night, and the sky never gets fully dark. In late December the day shrinks to roughly five hours, with sunset well before three in the afternoon, so midday is the only time to see anything in daylight. Winters bring steady snow cover and ice on the lakes, which makes these views useful for checking driving conditions before a trip.
Nearby, Punkaharju lies to the southeast along its narrow ridge between lakes, and Linnansaari National Park, home of the rare Saimaa ringed seal, is out in the lake to the northwest.
