Lappeenranta is the regional capital of South Karelia, set on the southern shore of Lake Saimaa in southeastern Finland. About 73,000 people live in the city, which lies some 30 km from the Russian border and about 215 km from Helsinki. Its oldest quarter is the hilltop fortress area above the harbor, with wooden garrison buildings, the Orthodox church and small museums. Two universities, LUT University and LAB University of Applied Sciences, bring thousands of students from many countries, and Lappeenranta Airport, opened in 1918, is the oldest operating airport in Finland.

Summer life centers on the harbor, where a giant sandcastle with a new theme is built every year and lake cruises leave for Saimaa's islands. The Saimaa Canal starts nearby and runs south toward Vyborg. Finland's land crossings to Russia have been closed since late 2023, so the border roads are much quieter than they used to be.

Weather cameras on the approach roads

The images on this page are captured by roadside weather stations that Fintraffic maintains to monitor conditions for drivers and winter maintenance crews; the data is open through Digitraffic. Around Lappeenranta they sit along national road 6, the main route from the Helsinki region via Kouvola toward Imatra and Joensuu, and along other main roads leading into the city. Expect still pictures updated every few minutes, looking down the lanes at snow, rain, fog or bright summer sun.

Lappeenranta uses Finnish time, two hours ahead of UTC in winter and three in summer. At midsummer the sun is up from about half past three until a quarter to eleven at night, and twilight fills the rest. Around the winter solstice there are only about five and a half hours of daylight, with sunset before three in the afternoon. Lake effect fog in autumn and heavy snow in midwinter are the conditions most worth checking.

Nearby, Imatra and its rapids, opened for a water show on summer evenings, are about 35 km northeast, and the Salpa Line bunker museum at Miehikkälä is a reminder of the area's wartime past.
