Kouvola is a city in the Kymenlaakso region of southeastern Finland, about 134 km northeast of Helsinki and 62 km east of Lahti, along the Kymi River. Its modern form dates from 2009, when six municipalities, among them Kuusankoski, Anjalankoski, Elimäki, Valkeala and Jaala, joined to form one large city with about 78,000 residents and more than 450 lakes. Kouvola grew as a railway town after the line from Riihimäki to Saint Petersburg was built in the 1870s, and later branches toward Kotka and Savonia made it one of the main rail junctions in the country. Large paper mills at Kuusankoski shaped the local economy for a century.
Kouvola holds two of southern Finland's best-known sights. Verla, an old wood-processing mill village, is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and Repovesi National Park, with its rocky cliffs, suspension bridges and a hand-pulled raft ferry, attracts hikers all year. The Tykkimäki amusement park keeps families busy in summer.
