Salo is a town in Southwest Finland, sitting on the Salo River roughly halfway between Helsinki and Turku, about 114 km from the capital and 52 km from Turku. The municipality has about 50,000 residents and stretches from farmland and forest down to the archipelago coast. For three decades it was one of the places where the world's mobile phones were made: Nokia opened a factory here in 1981 that once employed thousands, and its closing in 2015 hit the town hard. Former President Sauli Niinistö was born in Salo.

Visitors today come for the Salo Art Museum, housed in an old locomotive shed, the wooden town church, and the autumn Pumpkin Weeks (Kurpitsaviikot), held in October since 2021, when a free pumpkin park and lantern displays draw large crowds into town.
