Donostia / San Sebastián, the official bilingual name in Basque and Spanish, is a coastal city of about 188,000 people and capital of the province of Gipuzkoa in the Basque Country. It lies on the Bay of Biscay some 20 kilometers from the French border. The city wraps around La Concha, a shell-shaped bay with a wide sandy beach, framed by Monte Urgull and Monte Igueldo and guarded by the small island of Santa Clara. Since the nineteenth century, when Spanish royalty spent summers here, it has been an elegant seaside resort, and today it is just as famous for food: pintxo bars crowd the old town, and the area has an unusually large number of Michelin-starred restaurants. It shared the title of European Capital of Culture with Wrocław in 2016.

What the cameras show

The cameras listed here are published by Open Data Euskadi, the Basque Government's open data portal, which shares images from the region's traffic cameras. Around Donostia they cover the main motorway network: the AP-8 coastal motorway toward Bilbao and the French border at Irun, the GI-20 bypass that skirts the city to the south, and the start of the A-15 heading inland toward Navarre. Each view is a still frame refreshed every few minutes.

Like the rest of Spain, the city runs on Central European Time and changes to summer time on the last Sunday of March. The weather comes off the Atlantic: mild, rarely very hot, and often wet, with rain possible on any day of the year. Summer brings heavy traffic toward France and the beaches, and border crossings get busy on holiday weekends.

  • Tamborrada, 20 January: drummers parade for twenty-four hours on the feast of Saint Sebastian.
  • Jazzaldia, the jazz festival in the last week of July.
  • Semana Grande in mid-August, with an international fireworks contest over the bay.
  • The San Sebastián International Film Festival each September.

The fishing port of Pasaia and the coastal towns of Zarautz and Getaria lie close by.
