Pontevedra is a city of about 83,000 people in Galicia, northwestern Spain, and capital of the province of the same name. It lies at the head of the Ría de Pontevedra, where the Lérez river meets the sea, in the heart of the Rías Baixas, the deep coastal inlets known for seafood and Albariño wine. The granite old town, one of the best preserved in Galicia, has been almost entirely pedestrian since the late 1990s, and the city has collected international awards for its car-light urban planning, including a UN-Habitat prize in 2014. The Portuguese Way of the Camino de Santiago passes through, and pilgrims stop at the scallop-shaped church of the Virgen Peregrina, the patron of the city.

With the city center closed to most cars, the action is on the roads around it: the AP-9 Atlantic motorway between Vigo and Santiago de Compostela, the A-57 and the PO-11 link, and the older N-550 and N-541 routes. Cameras on these approaches are grouped under Pontevedra because it is the closest named place. Images are still frames replaced every few minutes.

Galicia's Atlantic climate means plenty of rain from autumn to spring, about 1,600 millimeters a year, and summers that are warm but rarely scorching. Coastal fog sometimes drifts up the ría in the morning. Pontevedra sits so far west within the Central European Time zone that the sun rises late, close to nine o'clock in midwinter, and sets after ten in late June; daylight saving runs from late March to late October.

August is festival month. The Fiestas de la Peregrina fill the city in the second week of August with concerts and a fair, and the Feira Franca, a medieval-style market in the old town, comes in early September. The beaches of the Sanxenxo coast and the island of Ons in the Atlantic Islands National Park are within easy reach.
