Live cameras in Hengchun, Taiwan

Hengchun is Taiwan’s southernmost township, filling much of the tip of the Hengchun Peninsula in Pingtung County. About 30,000 people live here, many in the old walled town that was built between 1875 and 1879 and still keeps its four gates and about half of its walls. The township is the gateway to Kenting National Park, with coral coastline, beaches, grassy headlands and Cape Eluanbi, the island’s southern point. Movie fans may know it as a setting of the 2008 hit Cape No. 7.

The 130 or so cameras here come from Taiwan’s highway agencies via the transport ministry’s open data service. The main thread is Provincial Highway 26, which enters Hengchun Township from Fenggang in the north and runs through most of the park’s tourist spots, so expect views of the road through town, the beach strips toward Kenting, and the curving coastal sections near the cape. Images are refreshed snapshots rather than smooth live video, and a frame might be a little old when you open it.

Wind, sun and seasons

Hengchun keeps Taiwan’s UTC+8 time and enjoys warm weather almost all year, with typical temperatures in the 20s Celsius. From about October to April, the northeast monsoon spills over the low southern end of the Central Mountain Range and races down as the luoshan feng, a strong downslope wind that can be powerful enough to push scooters around. On those days, cameras may show whipped-up surf and swaying trees under bright skies. Summer is the busy tourist season, roughly April through October, and also the time when typhoons pass close by.

Holiday weekends bring heavy traffic down Highway 26, especially on Friday evenings heading south and Sunday afternoons heading back north. Within the radius you will also find cameras near Checheng and the Fangshan coast, where the road meets the peninsula.
