Live cameras in Neili, Taiwan

Neili is not a city of its own but a busy neighborhood in the north of Zhongli District, part of Taoyuan City in northwestern Taiwan. It grew up around Neili railway station on the Western Trunk line, which sits between Taoyuan and Zhongli stations and first opened in 1902. Today the area is a dense mix of apartment blocks, night food stalls, factories and campuses: Yuan Ze University and Vanung University are both close to the station, and the Zhongli Industrial Park lies just to the west. Zhongli District as a whole has about 435,000 residents, and Neili is one of its liveliest corners, a place where students, factory workers and commuters to Taipei all cross paths.

Freeway 1 at the Neili interchange

The views on this page come from Taiwan's Ministry of Transportation and Communications, published through its TDX open data platform, which gathers the closed-circuit cameras of the Freeway Bureau and the highway authorities. Each camera is attached to the nearest place on our map, which is why this neighborhood collects so many. The main reason is National Freeway 1: the Neili interchange sits at about kilometer 57.6, connecting to Zhongyuan Road, and the freeway continues south to the large Zhongli system junction. Provincial Highway 66, the east-west expressway that also serves Zhongli, adds more views. Expect still frames that refresh every short while rather than smooth video, with lanes of trucks, buses and cars heading toward Taipei or Hsinchu.

Clocks in Zhongli read the same as in Taipei and Beijing, UTC plus eight, and they never shift for summer. Around the June solstice the sun rises close to five in the morning and sets about a quarter to seven; in December it sets a little after five. The plum rains of May and June and the typhoons of late summer and early autumn are the times when these pictures matter most, showing wet lanes, spray and slowdowns. Weekday rush hours, and the evenings before long holidays such as Lunar New Year, bring the heaviest freeway traffic.

Zhongli's main station and its night market are a short ride south, and Taoyuan International Airport is roughly twenty minutes to the northwest by road.
