Fresno is the county seat of Fresno County and the largest city in California's San Joaquin Valley, with about 542,000 residents at the 2020 census, the fifth-most populous city in the state. It sits near the geographic center of California, surrounded by some of the most productive farmland in the world, and serves as the business and service hub for the valley's farms, packing houses and small towns. Distinctive local sights include the Tower District with its historic theater, Woodward Park and its Shinzen Japanese Garden, and the Forestiere Underground Gardens, a network of rooms and courtyards carved below ground by one man over about forty years. Fresno State University is in the northeast of the city, and each October the Big Fresno Fair is the largest event in the Central Valley.

Route 99 and the valley freeways

These are Caltrans cameras, published by the California Department of Transportation. Four state highways converge on Fresno: State Route 99, the valley's main north-south freeway, plus State Routes 41, 168 and 180. The cameras watch these freeways and their interchanges, and because our map assigns each camera to its nearest place, this page covers the urban core and nearby stretches. Each view is a periodic snapshot, not a video stream. In winter they are useful for spotting the dense tule fog that settles over the valley floor and can cut visibility to almost nothing on Route 99.

The city runs on Pacific Time and springs forward an hour each March, falling back in early November. Summers are long, hot and dry, with many afternoons above 100 degrees Fahrenheit, while winters are cool and damp and can bring night frost. In June the sun sets about twenty past eight; around the winter solstice it sets before five. Late February and early March bring the Fresno County Blossom Trail, when almond, plum and peach orchards east of the city burst into bloom and weekend traffic heads out on the country roads.

Fresno is the closest large city to three national parks: Yosemite is about 60 miles north along Route 41, and Kings Canyon and Sequoia lie to the east, reached on Route 180.
