Live cameras in Irvine, United States

Irvine is a city in central Orange County, California, and one of the largest master-planned communities in the United States. The land once formed part of the vast Irvine Ranch, and in the late 1950s and 1960s the Irvine Company, working with architect William Pereira and planner Raymond Watson, laid out a city of residential "villages" separated by wide arterial roads, with business districts around the edges. The University of California opened its Irvine campus on ranch land in the mid-1960s, and the city incorporated in 1971. The 2020 census counted about 308,000 residents, and Irvine is often ranked among the safest large cities in the country.

Landmarks include the Irvine Spectrum shopping and entertainment center, with its Ferris wheel, and the Orange County Great Park, built on the former El Toro Marine Corps Air Station, where a tethered orange balloon lifts visitors for views over the county. Business parks near John Wayne Airport host many corporate headquarters.

The 5, the 405 and the El Toro Y

All of these views are Caltrans traffic cameras, with still images refreshing every few minutes. Irvine is crossed by two of Southern California's busiest freeways, Interstate 5 and Interstate 405, which meet at the El Toro Y on the southeast side of the city. State Route 133 runs south through Laguna Canyon toward the coast, and State Route 261 climbs into the hills toward the toll roads. Weekday rush hours bring long lines on the 405 toward Los Angeles and on the 5 toward San Diego.

Southern California's daylight time runs from the second Sunday of March to the first Sunday of November, and Irvine follows it. The climate is mild year-round, with "June Gloom" low clouds common on early summer mornings and dry Santa Ana winds in the fall. In summer the sun sets about eight o'clock, and in winter around five.

The beaches of Newport Beach and the art town of Laguna Beach are both within a short drive, while Tustin, with its remaining wartime blimp hangar, lies just to the north.
