Isla Vista is a small, crowded seaside community on the Santa Barbara County coast, squeezed onto about six-tenths of a square mile between Coal Oil Point and Campus Point. It is unincorporated, run since 2015 with help from its own community services district, and had about 15,500 residents in the 2020 census, most of them students at the University of California, Santa Barbara, whose campus borders it on the east. Apartments along Del Playa Drive sit right on the edge of eroding bluffs above the beach, and the town looks south across the Santa Barbara Channel toward the Channel Islands.

Because Isla Vista is so small, the cameras on this page are the nearest ones on our map rather than cameras inside the community itself. Most are Caltrans highway cameras around Goleta, along U.S. Route 101 and State Route 217, the short spur that carries traffic from the freeway to the university. Caltrans posts these as still snapshots that refresh every few minutes. The page also links a NOAA BuoyCAM on an offshore weather buoy in the Santa Barbara Channel area. Each picture is six frames side by side making a full 360-degree view of the water, taken about every hour in daylight only.

Isla Vista keeps Pacific Time, UTC-8 in winter and UTC-7 during daylight time. Late spring and early summer often bring the gray mornings locals call May Gray and June Gloom. Fall is usually warm and clear, and winter swells and rain arrive mostly between November and March. Sunsets over the channel are a local ritual from the bluffs, and the buoy's evening frames catch the same light.

Up the coast on our map, Lompoc adds views near Vandenberg and the flower valley, and Arroyo Grande covers U.S. Route 101 in San Luis Obispo County.
