Katmai National Park and Preserve covers about 4 million acres at the top of the Alaska Peninsula, roughly 290 miles southwest of Anchorage. No roads reach it; most visitors fly from King Salmon, where the park has its headquarters, then take a floatplane to Brooks Camp. The park was first protected as a national monument in 1918 to preserve the scene of the 1912 Novarupta eruption, the largest of the twentieth century. That eruption buried a valley under ash flows hundreds of feet deep, creating the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes, while the summit of nearby Mount Katmai collapsed into a caldera. It became a national park in 1980 and is now best known for its brown bears, about 2,200 of them.

The cameras on this page show both sides of Katmai. The USGS Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO) runs webcams on the Katmai group of volcanoes, which includes Katmai, Novarupta, Trident, Mageik and Martin, to look for steam, ash and changes on the peaks. In strong, dry winds AVO sometimes reports clouds of old 1912 ash lifted off the ground, which the cameras can help confirm. As of early October 2026, the Katmai volcanoes were at Normal/Green on the USGS scale of Normal, Advisory, Watch and Warning, with aviation colors from Green to Red. The other view is the Explore.org Brooks Falls bear cam, a curated YouTube live stream that can go offline at times.

When to look

Katmai keeps Alaska Time (UTC-9, UTC-8 in summer). Bears gather at Brooks Falls mainly in July, when sockeye salmon jump the falls, and again in September, when they feed heavily before winter. Fat Bear Week, the park's online contest for the best-fattened bear, ran September 22 to 29 in 2026. Long summer days give many hours of light; by October the days shorten fast and the cam season winds down.
