What you are looking at
The KAKN camera stands at about 1,050 m (3,440 feet) in Katmai National Park, north of the Katmai volcanoes, and looks south-southwest across the upper Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes toward Novarupta, about 7 km (4 miles) away. The frame shows a smooth, gray ash ridge in the foreground, a wide valley floor, and beyond, a line of snowy peaks along the volcanic chain.
The 1912 Novarupta eruption, the largest of the 20th century, filled this valley with ash flows up to hundreds of feet deep, and the nearby summit of Mount Katmai collapsed into a caldera now holding a lake. The area is wild and roadless, reached on foot from Brooks Camp. AVO keeps watch with seismic stations and cameras. Check the Alaska Volcano Observatory Katmai pages for current alert levels.
The picture on this page is a still frame, renewed about every ten minutes. Summer light shows the colors and textures of the ash, while winter blankets everything in snow. Dry windy days can whip old ash into dust clouds. Tip: those dust clouds are not eruptions; AVO sometimes issues notices about them because they can look like ash plumes from a distance.
