Aleutian Islands sunset live cam – Akutan (AKS camera)

What you are looking at
The AKS camera stands on the east side of Akutan Island in the eastern Aleutians, roughly 19 km (12 miles) east of the volcano's summit. It looks west across the island's rolling, treeless ridges toward Akutan Volcano, which on clear days rises as a broad snowy mass on the skyline; on many days, low cloud and fog leave only the dark foreground hills visible.
Akutan is a stratovolcano with a summit caldera and an active cone inside it, and it has been one of the more frequently active volcanoes in the Aleutians in historical times, with its most recent eruption in the early 1990s and a strong earthquake swarm in 1996. The village of Akutan and a large seafood processing plant lie on the island's east side. For its current status, check the Alaska Volcano Observatory's Akutan page and alert level.
New images arrive about every ten minutes. Aleutian weather is famously cloudy and windy, so clear frames are a treat, most often on cold, calm days. Summer nights are short and bright; winter days are short and dim. Tip: if this view is clouded in, try the AV06 camera, which sits closer to the summit on a different side.
