What you are looking at

Labeled AV12 and named for the Open Bight area on the north coast of Akutan Island, this camera looks northeast across open water rather than at Akutan's summit. On clear days the frame shows the sea surface, a nearby rocky headland, and, on the horizon, snow-covered peaks of the islands farther northeast, likely including Akun Island and the large volcanoes of Unimak.

This camera is one piece of AVO's monitoring network on Akutan, which also includes seismometers and GPS stations. Akutan Volcano itself rises behind the camera to the southwest, and the island's last eruption was in the early 1990s. Views like this help observers check weather and visibility around the island, and occasionally catch steam or ash from neighboring volcanoes. For current information, see the Alaska Volcano Observatory Akutan page.

The picture on this page is a still frame, renewed about every ten minutes. Calm, cold days give the clearest views across the water, and long summer evenings bring soft light; storms, sea fog and winter darkness often leave the frame gray or black. Tip: this view is best for weather and sea conditions; for the volcano itself, use the AKS or AV06 cameras.
