What you are looking at
This AVO camera, labeled AV06, sits on the eastern part of Akutan Island, some 14 km (9 miles) from the summit. It looks west over a dark ridge toward Akutan's upper slopes, where the snowy summit area appears beyond the near hillside. A GPS antenna on a tripod stands in the right foreground, part of the instruments that track tiny movements of the ground.
Akutan Volcano holds a summit caldera roughly 2 km across with a young cinder cone inside it, the source of most of its historical eruptions. It has been quieter since the 1990s, but AVO keeps a dense network of seismometers, GPS and cameras here because the island has a village and a busy fishing port. Check the Alaska Volcano Observatory Akutan page for the current alert level.
The image here refreshes about every ten minutes. Low morning or evening sun can paint the summit pink and gold, while fog, rain and wind-driven snow often hide it entirely. Raindrops on the lens are common. Tip: compare it with the AKS view farther east for a second angle on the same mountain.
