What you are looking at
The Isle of Man Government publishes this webcam over Douglas Outer Harbour, the island's main port in the capital, Douglas. The camera looks from high above the harbor over the ferry berths and linkspans, with the green slopes of Douglas Head and its houses in the background, and the Irish Sea beyond the breakwaters.
This is where the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company's ferries arrive and depart, linking the island with Heysham and Liverpool in England and, on some routes, Ireland and Northern Ireland. You may see a ferry docked at its berth, loading cars and trucks, or turning in the harbor, along with smaller workboats and the lifeboat. Rough weather on the Irish Sea is easy to see here, and in bad storms sailings can be delayed or cancelled. The harbor is especially busy around the TT races in late May and early June.
The webcam shows still images that refresh about every five minutes. A practical tip: if you are meeting someone off the boat, check the ferry company's timetable and then watch this view, since the ship's arrival in the harbor is clearly visible.
