What you are looking at
The Isle of Man Government publishes this webcam at Castletown, the island's former capital, in the south of the island. The camera looks over the harbor area at the edge of Castletown Bay: a slipway with boats pulled up on trailers, the harbor channel and a pier with a small lighthouse, and the open water of the bay beyond.
Castletown is a historic harbor town, home to Castle Rushen, one of the best-preserved medieval castles in the British Isles, though the castle is not in this view. You may see small boats launched from the slipway, fishing and pleasure craft moving through the harbor mouth, and the tide changing the scene dramatically, since the harbor partly dries at low water. Weather comes in from the Irish Sea, so the camera shows rolling clouds, sunny spells, rain and, on some evenings, pink and gold skies over the water.
The webcam shows still images that refresh about every five minutes, with a time stamp in the corner. A practical tip: compare a frame at high tide with one at low tide on the same day; the difference in the harbor shows how strong the tides are around the Isle of Man.
