What you are looking at
This ISLZ camera is on Unimak Island at about 635 m (2,080 feet), about 17 km (10.5 miles) east of Shishaldin Volcano, near the slopes of neighboring Isanotski. It looks west, and the frame often shows Shishaldin's sharp summit cone rising above a layer of clouds, with rocks and a GPS antenna dome on a tripod in the foreground.
Shishaldin is famous for its near-perfect cone shape and frequent activity. In 2023 it erupted with repeated ash explosions and lava in its summit crater, and partial collapses of the summit cone sent debris down its flanks. Isanotski, its jagged neighbor to the east, is an older, heavily eroded volcano. Check the Alaska Volcano Observatory Shishaldin page for the current alert level.
The snapshot updates about every ten minutes. Morning sun lights Shishaldin's east face directly, while evening light can silhouette it against the sky. Cloud layers below the summit are common and can make it seem to float. Tip: on cloudy days, this higher camera may still see the summit when lower ones cannot.
