What you are looking at

The WTUG camera sits at about 635 m (2,090 feet) on Unimak Island, about 28 km (18 miles) west-northwest of Shishaldin Volcano, and looks east-southeast. On clear days, Shishaldin's tall snowy cone dominates the frame above a snow-covered valley, with a smaller, jagged peak on the left side of the picture, likely neighboring Isanotski.

Unimak is the largest island in the Aleutians and holds several volcanoes, including Shishaldin, Isanotski, Westdahl and Fisher. Shishaldin is the most frequently active of them, with a significant explosive eruption in 2023. Cameras around the island help AVO watch for ash that could affect the communities of False Pass and Cold Bay and air traffic across the North Pacific. See the Alaska Volcano Observatory Shishaldin page for the current alert level.

New images arrive about every ten minutes. Sunrise often happens behind the volcano from this angle, giving dramatic silhouettes; winter days bring deep snow and short light. Tip: compare it with the BRPK and ISLZ cameras to see Shishaldin from three sides.
