Barakaldo, called Baracaldo in Spanish, is a city on the left bank of the Bilbao estuary in Biscay, in Spain's Basque Country. With about 103,000 residents it is the largest town in Greater Bilbao after the capital itself, and its center is only a short metro ride from Bilbao's old town. For more than a century it was a heavy-industry town: iron ore came down from the Biscayan mines, and the Altos Hornos de Vizcaya steelworks dominated the riverbank until the industrial crisis of the 1980s.

Much of that riverside land has since been rebuilt with apartments, parks and shopping centers. The Bilbao Exhibition Centre, the region's big trade-fair site, stands on the edge of town, and visitors also come for the botanical garden and the medieval Castrejana bridge. Barakaldo Club de Fútbol plays at the Nuevo Lasesarre stadium.

Across the water, a small ferry links Barakaldo to Erandio, and the Bizkaia Bridge, a UNESCO-listed transporter bridge, crosses the river mouth a few kilometers downstream between Portugalete and Getxo.
