Navalmoral de la Mata is a market town of about 17,000 people in the northeast of Cáceres province, Extremadura, and the main center of the Campo Arañuelo district between the Tagus and Tiétar rivers. It was founded in the late fourteenth century as a waypoint on the road between Madrid and Portugal, and it still lives off that position: roughly 180 kilometers from Madrid, it is the first sizeable Extremaduran town drivers reach on the way west. Irrigation schemes from the 1950s brought tobacco, cotton and other crops to the surrounding fields, the Valdecañas reservoir on the Tagus lies just to the south, and the Almaraz nuclear power plant, built from the 1970s, added jobs and new neighborhoods.

Being near the western edge of the Central European Time zone, the town has very late light in summer, with sunsets after 9:45 p.m. in late June.

The best-known local celebration is Carnival, declared a fiesta of regional tourist interest, with several days of parades in February or March. San Andrés is honored on 30 November. To the north lie the green valleys of La Vera and the Monastery of Yuste, where Emperor Charles V spent his last years, and Monfragüe National Park is about an hour west.
