Live cameras in Santutxu, Spain

Santutxu is not a separate town but a neighborhood of Bilbao, the largest city of the Basque Country. It sits on the hillside east of the old town, inside the city's fourth district, Begoña, alongside the barrios of Begoña and Bolueta. The name means little saint in Basque and comes from a small hermitage built here in 1737. Until the 1950s this was farmland and orchards; then waves of workers arrived for Bilbao's steel and shipbuilding jobs, and apartment blocks filled the slopes. Today it is the city's most populous neighborhood, home to about 31,000 people, and one of the most densely built residential areas in Europe. Metro Bilbao serves it at Santutxu and Basarrate stations, and the Basilica of Begoña, the shrine of the patron saint of Bizkaia, stands just to the south.

The feeds on this page come from Open Data Euskadi, the Basque Government's open data portal, which publishes images from the region's traffic management cameras. Few of them point at Santutxu's own narrow streets. Our map assigns each camera to its nearest named place, and Santutxu happens to be the closest label for many views on the eastern side of Bilbao, including the A-8 motorway corridor near Bolueta and the roads that climb toward Txurdinaga and the Bilbao ring. Treat this page as a window on traffic around eastern Bilbao rather than on the neighborhood itself. Images are stills that update every few minutes.

Bilbao follows Central European Time and switches to summer time each spring. Rain is common in every season here, so the pictures are useful for checking wet roads and low cloud, and in winter the light is gone by about six in the evening. Mid-July is a lively time, as the neighborhood's fiestas mark the feast of El Carmen on 16 July, and in late August the whole city celebrates Aste Nagusia, Bilbao's Big Week.

From here it is a short metro ride or walk down to the Casco Viejo, the riverfront along the Nervión and the Guggenheim Museum farther downstream.
