Tarancón is a town of about 16,700 people in the province of Cuenca, Castilla-La Mancha, and the second-largest municipality in the province after the capital itself. It lies on the edge of La Mancha about 80 kilometers southeast of Madrid. In the Middle Ages it was a hamlet within the lands of Uclés, controlled by the military Order of Santiago; it became a township in 1537 and received the title of city in 1921. Its landmarks include the sixteenth-century church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción and the Arco de la Malena, an old gateway. Today its economy depends largely on services and logistics, thanks to its position on major roads.
What the cameras cover
The DGT, Spain's national traffic administration, operates every camera on this page. Tarancón sits where two motorways cross: the A-3 Autovía del Este, which runs from Madrid to Valencia, and the A-40, a transverse route that links Toledo and Ocaña with Cuenca and Teruel. Cameras around this interchange and along the nearby stretches are grouped here as Tarancón is the nearest named place. They send still frames that are refreshed every few minutes.
The A-3 is the main road from the capital to the Valencian coast, so the heaviest flows come with summer departures, the Easter break and the Fallas weekend in March. On a normal weekday traffic moves freely outside Friday afternoon. Winters are cold and dry with frequent morning frost, summers hot. Spain keeps Central European Time year-round on the mainland, with an extra hour of daylight saving from late March until late October.
Each September, from the 7th to the 13th, the town honors its patron, the Virgen de Riánsares; the opening day features the Galopeo, a horseback procession through the streets. Nearby, the hilltop Monastery of Uclés, once the seat of the Order of Santiago, and the Roman city of Segóbriga, with its well-preserved theater, are each about twenty minutes away.
