Valladolid, nicknamed Pucela by its residents, is the largest city of Castile and León and the seat of the regional government. About 300,000 people live here, on the high plateau of the northern Meseta where the Esgueva river flows into the Pisuerga, a little before the Pisuerga joins the Duero. It has a rich past: the royal court settled here in the early 1600s, making it briefly the capital of the Spanish monarchy, and its university dates from the thirteenth century. Christopher Columbus died in the city in 1506, and Miguel de Cervantes lived here for a time; both houses can be visited. The surrounding countryside is wine country, with the Ribera del Duero, Rueda and Cigales districts all close by.
The traffic views
The feeds come from the Dirección General de Tráfico. Valladolid is a hub for several national roads: the A-62 between Burgos and the Portuguese border, the A-11 along the Duero valley, the N-601 toward León, and the VA-20 and VA-30 ring roads that carry through traffic around the center. Cameras placed along these routes near the city are listed here because Valladolid is their closest named place. They send still images on a short cycle of a few minutes.
Plateau weather shapes what you will see. Winters are cold, often foggy along the river valleys, and hard frosts can glaze the roads at dawn; summer days are hot and very dry, yet nights cool off quickly. Central European Time applies, with the clocks moving forward an hour in late March and back in late October. On short December days the light fades around six in the evening.
- Semana Santa: Holy Week processions with famous Baroque wooden sculptures, among the most admired in Spain.
- Seminci: the Valladolid International Film Week, held every autumn since 1956.
- Fiestas of the Virgen de San Lorenzo in early September.
Nearby, the castle of Peñafiel, home to a wine museum, and the historic town of Tordesillas are each less than an hour away by car.
