Live cameras in Miaoli, Taiwan

Miaoli City is the county seat of Miaoli County, in the hilly country between Hsinchu and Taichung on Taiwan’s western side. About 86,000 people live in the city, and the county around it is known for its large Hakka community; the place name itself comes from Hakka syllables that echoed an older word in the indigenous Taokas language. The city has two railway stations, National United University, and the Miaoli Railway Museum, while the county stretches from a sandy western coast to the high Xueshan Range in the east.

LiveLocation lists more than 130 cameras for Miaoli, all from Taiwan’s official freeway and highway CCTV network (Freeway Bureau and Highway Bureau feeds). Two national freeways cross the county from north to south. National Freeway 1 has interchanges at Toufen, Touwu and Sanyi, and National Freeway 3 runs a little closer to the coast, with its Houlong interchange connecting by Provincial Highway 6 to Miaoli City. Most views show long rural stretches, bridges over river valleys and the slopes near Sanyi. Pictures are refreshed periodically and may lag a few minutes behind real time.

Miaoli keeps UTC+8. Holiday weekends are the busiest time on both freeways, as this county lies on the main road between Taiwan’s north and center. Summer brings heat, afternoon thunderstorms and the typhoon season, roughly June through October. Winter is mild and drier than in the northeast, though cold fronts can bring cool, misty mornings in the hills. In spring the white tung blossoms on the hillsides are a favorite reason to visit Hakka towns.

Within the wider radius are Sanyi, famous for its wood carving and the old Longteng Bridge ruins, Tongluo’s tea and flower country, and Toufen, the county’s largest city. Farther north, cameras around Hsinchu and its science park come into range, while the southern edge reaches toward Taichung.
