Live cameras in Zhudong, Taiwan

Zhudong is an urban township in central Hsinchu County, about twenty minutes inland from Hsinchu City, with about 96,500 residents. It was founded in the middle of the eighteenth century under the Qing as Chhiū-kí-nâ, and under Japanese rule took the name Chikutō, which became Zhudong after 1945. Set where the Touqian River leaves the hills, the town grew rich on timber cut in the mountains behind it, a history told at the Zhudong Timber Industry Exhibition Hall. Today it is better known for technology: part of the Hsinchu Science Park and the main campus of the Industrial Technology Research Institute, ITRI, are here. The population is largely Hakka, and visitors come for Hakka food, the Zhudong Animation and Comic Creative Park and walks on Feifeng Mountain.

Science-town roads

The images on this page are freeway and highway cameras published by Taiwan's Ministry of Transportation and Communications through the TDX open data platform. National Freeway 3 runs near the township, and Provincial Highway 68, the expressway from the Nanliao coast past Hsinchu, ends in Zhudong. Provincial Highway 3, the long inland route, also passes through on its way between Guanxi and Beipu. Because our map files each camera under its nearest place, Zhudong collects many views on these roads. The pictures change in steps, one photo at a time.

The township's clocks read UTC+8 in both summer and winter. Its hill location means more rain and mist than on the coast, especially during the plum rains of May and June, while autumn is the clearest season before the northeast monsoon brings gray winter skies. Sunset ranges from about a quarter to seven in June to about ten past five in December. The Neiwan branch railway runs through town toward the old Hakka village of Neiwan, and on weekends traffic heads up the valleys to Hakka villages and hot springs.

Beipu, with its old street and lei cha pounded tea, is a short drive south, and the mountain district of Wufeng, home to Atayal and Saisiyat communities, lies farther up the valley.
