Live cameras in Zhubei, Taiwan

Zhubei is the seat of Hsinchu County, a county-administered city of about 213,000 people just across the river from Hsinchu City. It sits on the coast of the Taiwan Strait where the Fengshan and Touqian rivers reach the sea, and for most of its history it was farmland. That changed fast: thanks to the nearby Hsinchu Science Park and its semiconductor makers, Zhubei added more people between 2010 and 2019 than any other township or district in Taiwan. Rows of new apartment towers now rise beside the Taiwan High Speed Rail's Hsinchu station, which stands in Zhubei, along with the Hsinchu Biomedical Science Park and the Tai Yuen Hi-Tech Industrial Park.

Commuter roads of the chip belt

Zhubei's camera list is drawn from the Transport Data eXchange, the ministry-run service that opens up Taiwan's road CCTV to anyone. Zhubei's main road link is National Freeway 1, with the Zhubei interchange and, a little farther, the Hsinchu system junction where Freeway 1 meets the Provincial Highway 68 expressway. The cameras show lanes, ramps and interchanges used by many of the region's chip workers, and on our map each camera joins the nearest town, so this page gathers a large share of the views between the Touqian River and the county line. Think of them as a slideshow with a new photo every little while, not continuous video.

Zhubei shares the island's single time zone, UTC+8, and the hour never shifts between seasons. The northeast monsoon makes autumn and winter here gusty, the same winds that give neighboring Hsinchu its Windy City name, and drizzle can hang over the coast for days. Summer brings heat, thunderstorms and the occasional typhoon. In June the sun is up from about five until nearly seven in the evening; in December it sets around ten past five. Weekday mornings and the hour after work are the most interesting times to look, when traffic pulses in and out of the science parks.

Hsinchu City's old temple quarter is just southwest across the river, and the Hakka hill town of Zhudong lies about twenty minutes inland.
