Edwardsville is the county seat of Madison County, Illinois, in the Metro East part of Greater St. Louis, about eighteen miles northeast of downtown St. Louis. The 2020 census counted about 27,000 residents. Settler Thomas Kirkpatrick named the place in 1805 after Ninian Edwards, the territorial governor, and the town was incorporated in 1818, making it one of the oldest in Illinois; five Illinois governors came from here, and Abraham Lincoln spoke in town twice. Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, on a wide wooded campus south of downtown, shapes much of local life, Prairie Farms Dairy has its headquarters here, and the LeClaire Historic District preserves a cooperative factory village founded in 1890.
