Peoria is a river city in central Illinois and the county seat of Peoria County, with about 113,000 people (2020 census), the eighth largest city in the state. It sits on the west bank of the Illinois River where the river widens into Peoria Lake. The French built Fort Crevecoeur in the area in 1680, and Peoria calls itself the oldest permanent European settlement in Illinois; the modern town grew around Fort Clark, built in 1813, and took the name Peoria in 1825. Caterpillar had its headquarters here from its founding in 1925 until 2017, and today OSF HealthCare is the largest employer. Downtown and the riverfront are home to the Peoria Riverfront Museum, and Bradley University sits just west of the center.

Nearby, Grandview Drive winds along the bluffs above the river through Peoria and Peoria Heights; Theodore Roosevelt is said to have called it the world's most beautiful drive during a 1910 visit. Across the river, East Peoria's riverfront faces the downtown skyline, and the bridge views from either side are the best way to see the city on a camera.
