Grayslake takes its name from William M. Gray, a Massachusetts settler who arrived in 1840 beside the small lake that now carries his name. Today it is a village of about 21,200 people (2020 census) spread over roughly eleven square miles in central Lake County, around 40 miles north of downtown Chicago. It has a quieter, more residential feel than the lakefront cities, with older streets near the historic center and newer neighborhoods such as Prairie Crossing, a planned development built around open land.

Grayslake is also something of a county crossroads. The main campus of the College of Lake County is here, along with the University Center of Lake County, and every summer the Lake County Fair fills the fairgrounds on Peterson Road. Two Metra stations serve the village, one on the Milwaukee District North Line and one on the North Central Service.
