Mundelein is a village of about 31,600 people (2020 Census) in central Lake County, Illinois, roughly 33 miles northwest of downtown Chicago. The town went through several names, among them Holcomb, Rockefeller and Area, before settling in 1925 on the name of Cardinal George Mundelein, the Chicago archbishop who opened a major seminary here in 1921. That seminary, the University of Saint Mary of the Lake, still fills a wooded 600-acre campus on the shore of Saint Mary’s Lake, and its Chapel of the Immaculate Conception was finished in time for the 1926 International Eucharistic Congress. Diamond Lake, a glacial lake on the village’s west side, gives the town a second waterfront.
