Naperville is the fourth largest city in Illinois, with about 150,000 people (2020 census) spread across DuPage and Will counties, some 28 miles west of Chicago on the DuPage River. Joseph Naper founded the settlement in 1831 with family and friends who came from Ohio; it became a village in 1857 and a city in 1890. Naperville was the first county seat of DuPage County until it lost that role to Wheaton in 1867. Today the city is known for its Riverwalk, about 1.75 miles of brick paths, fountains and covered bridges along the river, for Naper Settlement, an outdoor history museum, and for Centennial Beach, a swimming spot built in an old quarry.

Commuter traffic fills I-88 and Route 59 on weekday mornings and again from mid-afternoon, and Saturday afternoons bring shoppers to the Route 59 corridor. In June the sun is up before 5:20 a.m. and sets around 8:30 p.m.; in December it rises after 7 a.m. and sets around 4:25 p.m. Winter storms are the most dramatic time to check in, while summer brings fast-moving afternoon thunderstorms that can briefly slow the tollway.

Nearby, the 158-foot Moser Tower beside the Riverwalk holds the Millennium Carillon, one of the four largest carillons in the world with 72 bronze bells, and Metra and Amtrak trains stop at Naperville's station on the BNSF line.
